Ballerina Buns – Hair trend 2014
It’s official. As we continue to embrace the trends of A/W 14, the ballerina bun is having yet another fashion moment – did it ever really go away? When it comes to channelling the top knotted bun, the look is easy and practical to achieve, instantly adding a hint of grace, romance, and elegance to your overall look.
The ballerina is no longer a childhood emulation buried deep in the confines of a dressing up box, she’s captivating, fashion forward and, without a shadow of a doubt, all grown up.
Defined as one of the most iconic pieces of a ballerina’s identity, the ballerina bun has inspired a wealth of hairstyles in recent years and has appeared on fashion runways the world over.
The ballerina bun is an easy to achieve yet striking hair trend that exudes femininity at the highest level. For the fashion forward, it has become a familiar and timeless style worn by some of the industry’s most influential models, designers and fashion icons. Today, firm followers of fashion such as Whitney Port, Kate Moss and Daisy Lowe have all been spotted sporting the top knot (ballerina bun).
Like many trends, this has then filtered down into mainstream fashion due to its accessibility and relaxed attitude. Having admired the style for many years, the ballerina bun is my ‘go to, quick fix,’ when I barely have time to brush my teeth, let alone construct my hair into an acceptable, public-friendly style for the day ahead.
Whether you choose to sport a low or high bun, neat or artfully dishevelled into a messy masterpiece, the look is a fail-safe option when you’re looking to achieve a subtle yet high impact look that takes only two minutes.
Another advantage of this trend is that it works both day and night. It’s great for everyday – creating an edgy yet sophisticated look. Mostly importantly, it’s even better for achieving a glam, high impact evening look. Especially if, like me, you’re always frantically running around at the last minute trying to get dressed.
There are lots of handy tools available in many high street shops that are perfect for helping you to achieve this look. I’m a beauty addict, constantly trying out the newest and latest fads but I have to admit that you can’t go far wrong if you invest in a hair doughnut. You can pick them up at your local chemist, hairdressers and many high street shops such as New Look and Claire’s Accessories. They come in a variety of hair shades and sizes, so make sure you pick one that best suits your hair colour, length and thickness.
Of course, you can always use a homemade sock bun. It sounds strange but it
does the job! Simply cut off the end of your sock (probably best to choose an odd sock!) and roll it inside out until you achieve the perfect doughnut shape. Next, secure your hair in a ponytail and loop the end of your ponytail through the doughnut shaped sock. Bend your hair over the loop and secure with a hair bobble. Now all you need to do is secure the rest of your stray ends around the bun using Kirby grips. Hello big, beautiful bun!
Remember fashion is about injecting your own unique twist on a trend or look. Experiment with plaits and volume to achieve the ultimate ballerina bun this season. What are you waiting for? Achieve a polished and sophisticated look today and embrace the ballerina bun trend.
